When I was younger, my mom let me at her fabric bin and I cut hundreds of 4x4" squares out of a lot of different colors and types of fabric. Not sure what I was planning on doing with all of them, but she kept them and mailed them to me recently. I decided that I would make her a scrap quilt out of some of it. I decided to try a braided pattern and it was pretty fun. Just to mix things up I alternated the rows- some braids going up and some down. The entire top except for the white is made from scraps. Here it is:
I used this tutorial to learn how to make the braided pattern:
I used this quilting pattern to put it all together:
I started out using the freezer paper method but I didn't like how it kind of loosened some of the stitches when I tried to tear the paper off- it did help to spray the paper with a little water- it tore easier. In the end, and for the bulk of the quilt, I drew the pattern on free hand. I just looked at the pattern and copied it onto the quilt top using a blue mark-b-gone fabric marker. I think it turned out pretty good- especially it you don't look too close :)
